Some trails are well marked, whereas others require more navigational expertise. Explore off the beaten track, in the backcountry - you will be hiking in remote, undeveloped and isolated areas. Permits are required for selected trails - plan ahead and check with the trail’s official organisation for permit requirements. Stay on track - hit the trail with multiple navigational tools, including paper maps, guidebooks, compass and trail hiking apps. There may be no designated places to camp - simply follow ‘Leave No Trace’ principles and camp at least 200 feet from lakes or streams. Zero or nero - you can either take a nero day (hike a few miles) or a zero day (0 miles hiked - aka rest day) in/ or out of town. Besides the incredible scenery and getting to walk every day, the best part was meeting so many like-minded, interesting and incredible people from all walks of life! My favourite places along the trail were the Sierra Nevada, climbing Mount San Jacinto and Mount Baden Powell in the desert... all the snowy mountains! I had never snow hiked before the PCT so it was a big learning curve learning how to navigate snow and use an ice axe, but they were some of the most exhilarating and rewarding experiences of the trail. I came out of the Sierra believing that if I could do that, then I could do anything! The camaraderie between thru-hikers on the trail was just amazing. Everyone was very supportive and encouraging of each other, particularly going through the Sierra Nevada in a big snow year. I was pretty surprised that I never really got bored with the trail or found it that mentally challenging. I really found my groove on the trail and thoroughly enjoyed just being out there walking everyday. After Camel’s Hump, we went into Waterbury for the day/night - I would highly recommend this. It’s a great stopping point to break up a super difficult section and was the most walkable town we stopped in. My boyfriend never suffered from blisters before, but after a tough day he got about eight all over his feet (don’t think you are immune from blisters - make sure to bring moleskin and leukotape). I developed some serious achilles tendon pain in the middle of the hike (first time for me). It was one of the hardest climbs, if not the hardest in the first 100 miles, and it was just super tough to tack onto the end of an already long day. I think we pushed ourselves a little too hard that day and it resulted in A LOT of blisters for my boyfriend. I gave myself a nosebleed and an asthma attack before reaching the summit, but the effort was totally worth it. I made it to the summit moments before the sun crested over the ridgeline. From the top of Freel Peak, you could see the whole TRT with Lake Tahoe in the middle as well as other surrounding mountains. Even at night, when strange noises seem to be amplified, I always felt safe and secure. The backcountry can be a very social place. There were about 10 other gals who were also soloing the JMT at the same time as me. We often leap-frogged one another, traded trail goods (Gatorade packets, Leukotape, trailmix, etc.) and words of encouragement, and occasionally hiked together.
